The recall includes Gold Star Original Can Chili, 10oz (UPC 2457500001), Gold Star Can Chili, 15oz (UPC 2457500005)
and Gold Star Tex-Mex Can Chili with Beans, 15 oz (UPC 2457500008) with ALL “best by” and code dates.
What is wrong with these products?
The product manufacturer, Castleberry’s Food Company, is recalling these products as a precautionary
measure due to possible botulism contamination. Botulism can cause serious health consequences, and can
even be fatal, so it’s important to check your canned goods to ensure they are not part of the recall.
What should I do if I have one or more of these products?
The Food and Drug Administration recommends that you double bag them in plastic bags that are tightly closed
before being placed in a trash receptacle for non-recyclable trash outside of the home. Additional instructions
for safe disposal can be found at
www.cdc.gov/botulism/botulism_faq.htm.
Can I get my money back?
Refunds will be provided by Castleberry’s on all affected products. Customers should return these
products to the grocery stores where they were purchased.
Are these canned products still available?
While we work to address this issue with Castleberry’s, these grocery products will be temporarily
unavailable in stores, and we recommend our customers check www.goldstarchili.com for regular updates in the days and weeks ahead.
Does this recall affect Gold Star Chili restaurants or any other grocery products?
This recall in no way affects the Gold Star Chili food products sold in our restaurants, nor does
it apply to our spice packs and frozen grocery products. Our restaurant chili is made in our commissary right
here in Cincinnati, and delivered to our restaurants under the strictest quality standards. In more than 40
years of serving our customers, we have never had a contamination problem in our restaurants, and there is no
threat of one now.
Is this contamination dangerous?
It can be. That is why it’s important to throw away any product that is included in this recall.
Affected product should be thrown away even if it does not look or smell spoiled.
What if I have eaten the affected product?
Seek medical advice or assistance from trained medical personnel.
