THOUSANDS OF LOCAL CHILDREN TO LEARN ABOUT FIRE PREVENTION IN SAFETY FAIR AT SAWYER POINT

CINCINNATI, Ohio - (May 9, 2003) - At least 4,000 tri-state elementary school children from about 30 schools were on hand to learn about fire prevention and other safety skills from more than 15 Greater Cincinnati fire and police departments at the 8th annual Gold Star Chili Safety Fair.

Held on Thursday, May 8 from 9:30 to 1:30 pm at Yeatman’s Cove at Sawyer Point, the Gold Star Chili Safety Fair featured:

  • Six S.A.F.E. houses – Special houses that actually produce smoke to teach children kitchen safety, how to crawl under smoke and what to do if they wake up and hear the smoke alarm or smell smoke.
  • Fire trucks and rescue units from fire houses throughout the tri-state
  • Police bicycle and horse patrols and fire clowns
  • Fire puppet show from the American Red Cross
  • 911 simulator from Ohio State Fire Marshal
  • "Stop, Drop and Roll" stations
  • Additional educational stations from several fire houses

    • According to the Cincinnati Fire Prevention Department, children are one of the highest risk groups for fire and the Gold Star Chili Safety Fair introduces children to safety initiatives. The Safety Fair is one of several year-round initiatives sponsored by the Cincinnati Fire Division and Gold Star Chili to teach fire prevention.
