The following fire and safety tips are brought to you from
Gold Star Chili and the Cincinnati Fire Division:
• If you catch your clothes on fire, remember to
Stop, Drop & Roll.
This helps to smother the flames.
• Practice fire exit drills in your home, know two ways out and have a
designated meeting place outside, away from your home.
• Install smoke detectors on every level of your home and test them
at least once a month to make sure they are working properly.
• In the hands of a small child a lighter can be more dangerous than
a gun. Keep matches and lighters out of reach and sight of small children.
• Never put water on a grease fire. If you do not have an extinguisher,
use a lid, smother the flames and turn off the burner.
• Smoking materials are the number one cause of fire-related fatalities
in the home. Never smoke in bed or when taking medications that can
cause drowsiness.
• Keep all combustible materials at least three feet away from space
heaters and never keep them on when you leave the house or go to bed.
• Never put oily rags in a pile because they can ignite themselves.
Instead, store them in a metal container with a tight lid.
• Store unused charcoal in a cool dry place. Damp charcoal can ignite
itself. Store unused charcoal in a metal container with a lid.
• When cooking, do not wear loose fitting clothes that could hang and
brush against a burner.
• Do not overload electrical outlets. Remember, extension cords are
not to be used as permanent wiring.
• To prevent scalding, set your water heater so that it is no higher
than 120 degrees.
• Store all flammable liquids in safe containers and away from any
type of heat source.
• Keep halls and stairways clear of all debris and clutter.
• Contact your local fire department for more information on how you
can keep your family safe from fire and other emergencies.
