Statement from John Sullivan, President & CEO of Gold Star Chili RE: Castleberry’s Food Co. Product Recall "Gold Star Chili's canning vendor – Castleberry's Food Company out of San Diego, California – has announced a voluntary recall due to the risk of botulinum toxin, a bacterium which can cause botulism. The recall includes Gold Star Chili can grocery products that are produced by Castleberry Food Company in their Augusta, GA plant. Gold Star Original Can Chili (10 oz. UPC 2457500001), Gold Star Can Chili (15 oz. UPC 2457500005) and Gold Star Tex-Mex Can Chili With Beans (15 oz. UPC 2457500008) are included in the recall and the recall includes all production dates. The health and safety of our customers has always been Gold Star Chili's top priority, and we have always adhered to the highest standards of food safety and quality. Castleberry's voluntary recall is a proactive, precautionary measure, but the possibility exists for potential contamination. No illnesses have been reported and no contamination has been found in connection with Gold Star Chili can products, but we prefer to err on the side of caution and we are asking our customers to not consume the affected can products at this time. This recall in no way affects the Gold Star Chili food products sold in our restaurants, nor does it apply to our spice packs and frozen grocery products. Our restaurant chili is made in our commissary right here in Cincinnati, and delivered to our restaurants under the strictest quality standards. In more than 40 years of serving our customers, we have never had a contamination problem in our restaurants, and there is no threat of one now. Refunds will be provided by Castleberry's on all affected products. Customers can receive a refund by returning the product to the grocery store where it was purchased. While we work to address this issue with our canning vendor, these grocery products will be temporarily unavailable in grocery stores, and we recommend our customers check www.goldstarchili.com for regular updates in the days and weeks ahead.
